Regular visitors to this blog will be hard-pressed to forget the fabulous Lava Lamp Airstream that we finished earlier this year for client Bernard Fontannaz, which was craned into his back garden in Oxford. The interior design for this retro-themed Airstream was inspired by the inside of a lava lamp.
Well now you can get a proper 360 degree look around inside the Airstream and find out what Bernard gets up to in there as he is going to be featured on episode 2 of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces on Channel 4 tomorrow night. In the series, George Clarke explores the extraordinary world of small builds, where people turn tiny spaces into the most incredible places to live, work and play. This project was certainly for playing – if you haven’t seen it before you can find out more about it in these blog posts

Back to the Lava Lamp Airstream today and a closer look at the lighting. As previously mentioned, the whole design is based on the inside of the Lava Lamp and there’s one recessed into the wall between the kitchen and the rear seating area:
Running along the ceiling is a panel fitted with hundreds of twinkling ‘stars’
There are also some LEDs positioned around the main seating area
Different lamps and spotlights are positioned throughout to illuminate the bathroom and the various cocktail making surfaces:
The mood lighting can be controlled by remote control with a round controller to alter the colour, the speed of the twinkling and flashing and the brightness of the lights in different areas. In combination with the surround sound stereo system and various gadgets such as the wine cooler and popcorn machine this Airstream has been a very interesting job for our electrician Terry who originally learned his trade as a helicopter electrician for the Royal Navy.
